The Apsara Authority and Siem Reap provincial officials have demolished 49 homes out of 520 slated for removal within the Angkor Archaeological Park since Thursday, officials said yesterday.

Representatives of the Pu Nong indigenous community in Mondulkiri province’s Bou Sra commune have accused the director of the Provincial Rural Development Department of forcing them to withdraw a complaint over the prevention of their indigenous peoples’ day celebration last year.

As the Apsara Authority knocked down seven illegal structures in the Angkor Archeological Park yesterday, other residents expressed confusion over why they were first granted permission to build homes but are now being evicted.

At a celebration of the 23rd International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, in Kampong Thom province’s Old Stadium, indigenous people’s representative Chhin Nak said that the government had been paying attention and promoting the rights of indigenous people who are living on land they depend on for survival.

A court in Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh on Tuesday rejected an appeal by land activist and rights campaigner Tep Vanny of her conviction on charges of “aggravated intentional violence,” drawing condemnation from rights groups who demanded she be freed.
